Of course it's not bad to forecast if you are skeptical of the results, recognize that it reflects a best-case scenario, and just consider it to be a rough idea of what might happen.You Need a Budget combines easy software with Four Simple Rules to help you quickly gain control of your money, get out of debt, and save more money faster. If you believe in the forecast, it can lead to making bad decisions because you may be counting on money that won't be there because you didn't (and couldn't) account for unexpected expenses. (I.e., if I want to go on a vacation next August that will cost $2000, I should save $220 every month in a vacation category if Amazon Prime is due in 6 months, I should save $15/month now, etc.).įorecasting, on the other hand, tends to deal with future income and and is always overly optimistic. The difference is that planning is actionable now and deals with future expenses: it requires determining future expenses and acting on them now. That's why YNAB is skeptical of forecasting.although they explicitly require planning. Meaning that no matter how little money you think you have, you actually will have less. There will always be unexpected expenses (computer dies friend's wedding, etc.), and there will rarely be unexpected income. This is a good exercise - but keep in mind that any sort of forecasting is still going to be a best-case scenario. I want to see how little money I actually have, so that when I get paid I don't think I can afford to spend more than I actually can.
